oil on paper
Unpigmented oil drawings form a particular category of my creative process: I use poppy seed oil, linseed oil and grape seed oil to explore controlled mark making, process, imagery and the transforming effects of light on, within, and through the surface. The unpredictability of the medium is also a vehicle with which to experiment and explore interactions with varied materials.
The marks made with oil penetrate and become part of the paper as they spread and seep, and develop a forceful presence within a completed work. I have developed methods to ground drawings with pastel and backlighting others with a light box, to hide, reveal and change effects and textures.
